SUMMARY:FGSS Careers Beyond the Professoriate
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a panel discussion and workshop on pursuing careers beyond the professoriate in FGSS and the humanities. This event will feature a conversation with Liz M. Alexander\, Stephen Kim\, Lynne Stahl\, and Cameron Scott about their journeys to their current careers\, followed by a short workshop on identifying transferrable skills with Denise DiRienzo\, the Experiential Program Director in the Graduate School’s Careers Beyond Academia program. \nPanelist Bios: \nLiz Murice Alexander is a doctoral candidate in Literatures in English\, completing a dissertation titled Dirty Computers: Erotic Data Poetics. They serve as Digital Communications Grad Intern at the Cornell LGBT Resource Center\, a season two producer with Change Agents the Podcast\, and founder at SixtyFifthSt Media. \nStephen Kim completed his PhD in English at Cornell in 2020 with minor fields in FGSS and American Studies. During his time as a graduate student\, he worked for Cornell’s Intergroup Dialogue Project (IDP). After graduating\, he took a full-time position with IDP as their curriculum specialist. Though this is not the career path he imagined for himself when starting graduate school\, his training in FGSS has prepared him well for his current position\, which involves EDI work in both academic and student life spaces. \nLynne Stahl is the Humanities Librarian at West Virginia University. She earned her PhD in English from Cornell in 2015\, and her research interest spans film\, gender theory\, popular culture\, and critical information studies. \nCameron Scott received his PhD in Comparative Literature from Cornell in 2002 and an MA in Creative Writing (Poetry) from the University of Texas in 1999. He is currently a writer and editor at UCSF\, the University of California’s all health-sciences campus. He has also worked as a science writer at Stanford University. He worked as a journalist for several years\, focused on technology\, health\, and medicine. He lives in Oakland\, CA. \nJoin us via Zoom.

SUMMARY:Thinking of a career in Academic Publishing?
DESCRIPTION:This webinar features two professionals from Cornell University Press. \nMartyn Beeny is Marketing and Sales Director at Cornell University Press after holding the same role at University of Nebraska Press. Martyn entered publishing while completing his Ph.D. in history. He never intended to be a book marketer\, but when a job opened at the South Dakota State Historical Society Press that combined his love of books and history it seemed a good idea. His apprenticeship with this small publisher changed his career path from academia to marketing and publishing. After eight years in South Dakota\, he worked as Marketing and Sales Director at one of the largest university presses in Lincoln\, NE\, before moving to Cornell UP\, where he has been for five years. \nBethany Wasik is an acquisitions editor at Cornell University Press\, currently acquiring projects in the fields of Classics\, Archaeology\, Modern European History\, and Military History. Prior to joining the acquisitions team at Cornell University Press six years ago\, she completed a Ph.D. at Indiana University and two postdoctoral fellowships in molecular biology and genetics at Yale and Cornell Universities. In addition to her science background\, she minored in anthropology with a focus on archaeology\, and took a wide range of history courses as an undergraduate. Her transition from academics to publishing was fueled by a passion for editing and reviewing scholarly content and a desire to promote that content to a larger audience. \nAdvance Registration Required for Zoom Link.
