SUMMARY:Italy Trek Info Session
DESCRIPTION:Each year during spring break\, in a course intended to promote the understanding of family businesses\, the Smith Family Business Initiative leads a weeklong student trek (NBA 5920) to Italy to explore the country’s many significant family businesses\, Italian history\, and culture. For those interested in learning about family businesses\, Italy is an important destination. There are estimated to be around 784\,000 family businesses in the country\, comprising over 85% of the total business landscape and providing around 70% of employment. What distinguishes Italian family businesses is their remarkable longevity: among the world’s 100 oldest businesses\, 15 are Italian. Notably\, five of these – including Fonderie Pontificie Marinelli (founded in 1000)\, Barone Ricasoli (1141)\, Barovier & Toso (1295)\, Torrini (1369)\, and Marchesi Antinori (1385) – rank among the top ten oldest family businesses still in operation today. \nThrough these visits\, the group seeks to peek behind the scenes at business operations and speak with family members to understand the values and beliefs underpinning the foundation of these companies. This program is open to graduate students across Cornell. It is a 1.5 credit course. Please register for the info session on December 4th via Zoom to learn more. \nAbout the Matthew Unger MBA’23 Fellowship for Experiential Learning\nThe Matthew Unger MBA ’23 Fellowship for Experiential Learning provides financial support of up to $5\,000 for up to two students to participate in the Family Businesses in Italy Trek (March 29-April 5\, 2025)\, led by the Smith Family Business Initiative (SFBI) at the SC Johnson College of Business. Generously established by recent alumnus Matthew Unger\, ‘MBA ’23\, this fellowship is open to all graduate students at Cornell University\, and its objective is to eliminate potential participation barriers for persons of color and other underrepresented groups\, ensuring equal access among all students to this transformative experiential learning opportunity. There are two spots available for this fellowship program this year. We are seeking applicants who would greatly benefit from this unique opportunity to explore family businesses through the Italy trek. Selection will be based on a combination of merit and financial need. She served on the Tumor Microenvironment study section\, is a Senior Editor of Cancer Research\, and serves on the Editorial Board of the ACS journal Biomaterials Science and Engineering and Tissue Engineering. With an H-index of 58\, she has over 8000 citations for her ~150 published articles\, book chapters and opinion pieces.\nAlex Kwan MS’07 PhD’09 is Associate Professor of Applied Physics in the Meinig School of Biomedical Engineering at Cornell and Adjunct Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine where he was for 9 years before returning to Cornell. His lab studies systems neuroscience with a focus on novel psychiatric drugs. He publishes papers each year in diverse high impact journals such as Nature Neuroscience\, ACS Chemical Neuroscience\, Neuron\, Eneuro\, Nature\, Neurophotonics and more. Highly cited\, he is also active at conferences\, on github\, and on social media to widely disseminate his research findings.\nPeter McCracken is an electronic resources librarian in Olin Library\, and has been with Cornell since 2016. He oversees the Cornell Open Access Publishing (COAP) Fund\, which provides financial support for some OA publications. Peter was a Reference Librarian at East Carolina University\, and then at the University of Washington\, before co-founding Serials Solutions\, a company that helps libraries manage electronic journals and e-resources\, and is now part of Clarivate. He also founded ShipIndex.org\, an online database that helps people do research on ships. Peter has published in multiple library and maritime history publications\, including as a co-author of the American Library Association’s first OA monograph\, plus several recent Diamond OA articles.\nDavid A. Putnam is the Samuel B. Eckert Professor in Engineering in the Meinig School of Biomedical Engineering / Smith School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. He is also the inaugural Associate Dean for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Cornell\, having co-founded several companies based on his research and that of his graduate students and postdocs. He is currently a member of seven Editorial Advisory Boards including Pharmaceutical Research\, Journal of Controlled Release\, Analytical Biochemistry and Experimental Biology and Medicine. Along with his ~160 publications that have been cited over 10\,000 times\,  he also holds ~40 patents.\nMingming Wu is a Professor in Biological and Environmental Engineering and leads the Biofluidics lab that develops micro- and nano-scale technologies for solving contemporary biological\, medical\, and environmental problems.
