DESCRIPTION:Graduate Students Mentoring Undergraduates (GSMU) program is a collaborative initiative between The Office of Academic Diversity Initiatives (OADI) and the Graduate School Office of Inclusion & Student Engagement (OISE) and is designed to support the scholarship and professional development of undergraduate scholars in the Pre-Professional Programs\, McNair Scholars Program\, and OADI Research Scholars. \nThe GSMU program strives to: \n\nCollectively create and maintain a safe space for the cultivation of open\, authentic\, and honest relationships with GSMU community members\nInform students’ pursuit of graduate studies by exposing them to and encouraging their exploration of different disciplines and post-baccalaureate journeys\nEncourage students to reflect on their undergraduate experiences thus far and consider how to shape future experiences in service of their pursuit of graduate studies\n\nIn addition to supporting undergraduate students’ paths through academic life\, GSMU aims to support graduate mentors in their own growth and development. Nexwell promotes these initiatives and makes these investments by guiding and partnering its portfolio companies with like-minded infrastructure investors\, venture capitalists and entrepreneurs. Prior to Nexwell\, Andreas founded and ran Sonnedix Global Holdings as its CEO from startup to a $4 billion global solar power generation company over a 9 year period. His successful career spans more than 20 years in the energy and industrial sectors\, with experience ranging from global executive leadership positions with accountability for all aspects of running a business\, including strategy\, performance\, development\, staffing and execution\, to earlier roles in M&A and turn-around management. \nAndreas graduated as a structural engineer from Cornell University’s School of Civil and Environmental Engineering and has an MBA from IESE Business School in Spain. She earned her PhD in 2016 from Cornell in biomedical engineering with David Putnam. \nEbrahim Nemati is Senior Research Scientist at Samsung Research America where he interned in their Digital Health Lab as a graduate student. He earned his PhD in electrical and computer engineering from UCLA in 2017. \nKent Göklen is GSK’s Director of Downstream Process Development\, in the biopharmaceutical business unit of GlaxoSmithKline in King of Prussia\, PA. DESCRIPTION:We’ll start with a short overview presentation with pro tips on how to use LinkedIn\, some exercises to identify a good tagline\, and a very interactive session where participants work on their own profiles and critique others’ –so you will need to bring your own computer. Perhaps more than ever\, communicating our science effectively and succinctly can be the difference between making an impact vs. missing opportunities to make the world a better place. This workshop will focus on science communication – drawing from lessons learned and hands-on training opportunities. Case studies\, data on communication\, and the “message box” will be discussed\, all in a highly participatory and interactive way. All fields are welcome — from novices to experts — and be prepared to be an active participant! \nDr. Ben Houlton is the Director of the John Muir Institute of the Environment at the University of California. Howard was appointed Commissioner of the New York State Public Service Commission (Commission)\, his term runs through February 1\, 2024. Mr. Howard brings over 37 years of New York State service\, serving in various roles in the Legislature and Executive branches\, with vast experience in the energy sector to the Commission. At the New York Power Authority\, he was responsible for monitoring relevant activities at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC)\, Department of Environmental Conservation and the Commission. He served as Executive Deputy Director at the New York State Consumer Protection Board where he oversaw the Board’s utility intervention filings to the Commission\, FERC and the Federal Communications Commission. He was also responsible for the Board’s consumer advocacy and public outreach programs. \nAs Executive Director for then Member of Assembly Paul D. Tonko\, Chair of the Assembly Energy Committee he developed and led the Chairman’s program in energy policy and legislation including low cost energy programs\, electric deregulation\, authority reform and energy taxes. Mr. Howard served as Deputy Chief of Staff to then Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo where he developed and oversaw implementation of the Attorney General’s Community Partnership Initiative and worked on the Attorney Generals’ Wind Energy Industry initiative. \nSince 2011 he served as Director of Chamber Operations to Governor Cuomo where he was responsible for the execution of Governor Cuomo’s public appearances across the State\, requiring detailed knowledge of the Governor’s policy initiatives\, New York’s geo-politics\, including Federal\, State and local officials as well as every State agency and authority. \nOn September 23\, 2019 Commissioner Howard was appointed as member of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners’ Subcommittee on Nuclear Issues-Waste Disposal. \nCommissioner Howard received Bachelor of Science from Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and resides in Duanesburg\, New York.

SUMMARY:Medical Devices for Humanity\, Fun and Profit
DESCRIPTION:Alumnus David Fischell\, ’75\, MS ’78\, PhD 80′\, Chairman and CEO Angel Medical Systems\, will be speaking at the Enterprise Engineering Colloquium on October 16 @ 4:30 pm\, B-11 Kimball Hall. \nMedical devices provide an important avenue of therapeutics and diagnostics improving human healthcare. Dr. Fischell is an inventor and serial entrepreneur who has helped found 15 medical device companies over the last 25 years. He will discuss the field of medical devices and the process by which one takes an idea and gets it into a final product and company. \nHe will also present results from one or more of his recent start-ups that include: \n• Angel Medical Systems (Chairman) – angel-med.com – implantable alarm system for heart\nattacks\n• Neuropace (Director) – neuropace.com – implantable brain pacemakers to treat epilepsy\n• eNeura (Chairman) – eneura.com – portable magnetic pulse generators to cure migraine\nheadaches and\n• Ablative Solutions (Director) – ablativesolutions.com – a novel catheter whose use can cure\nor dramatically reduce high blood pressure. \nAfter earning his Cornell Ph.D. in Applied Physics and Electrical Engineering\, David joined Bell Laboratories in 1979 where\, for 11 years\, he performed and directed a wide range of research and development projects including leading an internal venture and the design and development of an integrated platform in the AT&T network for AT&T’s first ever enhanced voice service\, InfoworxTM.  He left Bell Labs in 1991 to work full time on medical devices.  He currently has 178 issued U.S. patents and has published numerous papers in the fields of telecommunications\, cardiology and radiation dosimetry.  He was the primary designer of the BX Velocity™ and Cypher™ Stents for Cordis\, a Johnson & Johnson Company\, that were implanted in more than 7 million patients.  Cypher was the world’s first drug eluting stent. \nHosted by Operations Research & Information Engineering (ORIE) \nCONTACT: John Callister jc62@cornell.edu 607-339-7420 \n
