DESCRIPTION:Writing Beyond the Academy\nThe Society for the Humanities presents a freelance criticism workshop for Cornell graduate students \n\nWith panelists: \n\n\nOumar Ba is an editor at the online magazine Africa Is a Country. His writings have appeared in Foreign Affairs\, the Washington Post\, the New York Review of Books\, and Al Jazeera. He is an assistant professor of international relations in the Department of Government at Cornell. \n\n\nCharles Petersen is a senior editor at n+1 magazine\, where he has served in various capacities for fourteen years. He has also worked as a book review editor for a national newspaper and as the assistant to the editor in chief at the New York Review of Books. In addition to n+1 and the New York Review\, he has written for Bookforum\, The Nation\, the New York Times\, the Wall Street Journal\, the Los Angeles Times\, the San Francisco Chronicle\, Art in America\, and the New Yorker. He received his PhD in American studies at Harvard in 2020 and he is currently a Klarman Postdoctoral Fellow in the history department at Cornell. \n\n\nAnna Shechtman is a senior humanities editor at the Los Angeles Review of Books (LARB). In addition to LARB\, her writing has appeared or is forthcoming in ArtForum\, newyorker.com\, The New Inquiry\, and Slate. She writes crossword puzzles for the New York Times and The New Yorker and is currently working on a trade book about crosswords and gender. She is a Klarman Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Literatures in English and will be joining that department as an assistant professor in 2024.

Training activities may include role-play\, mini lectures\, reading/discussion\, hands-on writing blog posts and other outreach materials\, real-time practice being interviewed for the media\, and discussion with invited speakers. Several guest speakers will be featured throughout the weekend. The below public panel discussion on Opportunities in Science Communication kicks off the COMM 5660 course and is held Friday 4:30-6:30pm. The weekend workshop runs 9-5pm Saturday and Sunday. Through workshops in this series\, we will work to identify attitudes and behaviors that can help us be more resilient as we navigate difficult situations in school\, work and life. Each workshop will highlight emotional intelligence competencies needed for success in research and healthcare careers and will provide strategies for developing these competencies as part of your educational journey. While you may participate in any of the webinars\, it is best to participate in the entire series as the material relates and concepts will be developed throughout the series. The startup recently won $50k in the NFL’s 1st & Future competition\, sponsored by the National Football League. \nAlejandro Cortese\, PhD ’19\nCo-founder and CEO of OWiC Technologies\, Inc\, an early-stage startup that spun out of doctoral research on microscopic optical wireless integrated circuits\, or OWiCs\, at Cornell University. \nAustin Hickman\, PhD ’21\nA doctoral candidate in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Cornell University\, working under the guidance of Prof. Debdeep Jena and Prof. Grace Xing. His work is focused on the fabrication and characterization of next generation RF transistors\, as well as the semiconductor physics underlying the devices. These III-Nitride\, high-electron-mobility transistors are targeting high-power\, mm-wave applications.
