SUMMARY:LinkedIn Professional Photographs
DESCRIPTION:for PhD students and postdocs in any discipline \nCareers in Academia is bringing back award winning portraitist Roger William Theise to take a professional headshot so you can look your best for your LinkedIn profile\, and more. \nDress professionally and be prepared to arrive 10 minutes early for your appointment. One reminder will be sent the week of the session\, confirming your time slot. If your schedule changes unexpectedly\, please be sure to notify us so someone else can take your reserved slot. In the past we have been able to accommodate a few walk-ins. \nCheck the timeslot you signed up for via this Google Sheet and be sure to show up 10 minutes early! \nMessage from the photographer:\n“Your session will be to create a high quality classic studio portrait\, so looking your best is important. It is also very important to wear or bring long sleeves. A tie and jacket\, or blazer and blouse is always a good choice\, along with any type of business or office attire that demonstrates professionalism. Jewelry and makeup tend to photograph very well. \nDarker outer solids tend to photograph exceptionally well on just about everyone. \nPlease try to avoid any bright\, overly saturated colors\, polka dots\, or distracting stripes & patterns. (If this is your regular established style\, then choose the very best\, least distracting and go with it!) \nClothing with commercial logos or any element that would diminish the professionalism in your appearance should be totally avoided as they not appropriate for this type of portrait. \nYour portrait should convey an accurate reflection of your own style and character while meeting the expectations of your goals for future professional positions\, symposiums\, or current establishment of an upgraded profile image. \nKeep in mind that your portrait may have several years or more of useful longevity\, so please choose attire that would allow you to feel your very best for a portrait. Rest assured\, I will purpose to create a portrait you like\, and you will have the opportunity to personally select a pose or smile that you are pleased with. \nSee you there! \nRoger William Theise\nAward Winning Portraitist

SUMMARY:Building a Better Graduate Education
DESCRIPTION:The CNY Humanities Corridor “Humanities Beyond the Academy” working group hosts a series of mini-residencies for publicly engaged humanistic scholars\, bringing together those interested in public humanities and careers outside the academy. Current mini-resident Leonard Cassuto\, author of The Graduate School Mess: What Caused It and How We Can Fix It and (with Robert Weisbuch) The New PhD: How to Build a Better Graduate Education\, offers a discussion focused on this topic.  \nScholars and authors Leonard Cassuto and Robert Weisbuch argue that universities need to undergo major reforms to their graduate training programs to improve career outcomes for humanities doctoral students. In this discussion\, they focus in particular on how proponents of change can find allies and overcome resistance to reform. \nCornell University\, Syracuse University and University of Rochester are collaborating to bring these mini-residencies together for Humanities PhDs and Postdocs. SUMMARY:Empowering Graduate Students to Advocate for Change
DESCRIPTION:The CNY Humanities Corridor “Humanities Beyond the Academy” working group hosts a series of mini-residencies for publicly engaged humanistic scholars\, bringing together those interested in public humanities and careers outside the academy. Current mini-resident Leonard Cassuto\, author of The Graduate School Mess: What Caused It and How We Can Fix It and (with Robert Weisbuch) The New PhD: How to Build a Better Graduate Education\, offers a workshop specifically for graduate students in the humanities\, helping those who want to see and advocate for change within their own departments go about this successfully. The workshop aims to give attendees a toolbox for practical change\, indicating how they can achieve consensus on goals\, garner support\, and turn talk into action—letting graduate students themselves serve as key agents of change. 5 copies of Cassuto and Weisbuch’s book will be given away by raffle to attendees. \nThe CNY Humanities Corridor group is comprised of Cornell University\, Syracuse University and University of Rochester.  \nTo Register for this virtual event.

SUMMARY:NIH Webinar: Becoming a Resilient Scientist Series – An Introduction to Resilience and Wellness
DESCRIPTION:Speaker(s): Sharon Milgram\, PhD\, Director\, OITE \nThis event is recommended for: Postbacs; Graduate Students; Postdocs/Fellows; NIH Staff Scientists/Staff Clinicians \nRegister for Session 1 \nAccessibility Information: Sign language interpreting services and live captioning will be provided for this event. Individuals who need other reasonable accommodations to participate in this event should contact Jackie Newell (newellj@nih.gov) or the Federal Relay Service @ 800-877-8339. Requests should be made as soon as possible. \n********************************************** \nBECOMING A RESILIENT SCIENTIST SERIES\nNavigating school\, the career exploration process\, research environments\, and the stress of national/international news can seem overwhelming and lead us to doubt ourselves just when we need confidence the most. Through workshops in this series\, we will work to identify attitudes and behaviors that can help us be more resilient as we navigate difficult situations in school\, work and life. Each workshop will highlight emotional intelligence competencies needed for success in research and healthcare careers and will provide strategies for developing these competencies as part of your educational journey. While you may participate in any of the webinars\, it is best to participate in the entire series as the material relates and concepts will be developed throughout the series. Data show that trainees who attended most of the sessions of the earlier “Becoming a Resilient Scientist Series” reported that they had become more resilient\, were better able to handle stress and conflict in their lives\, and would recommend the series highly to their colleagues. \nThe workshops in the series are: \nSession 1 (September 23) – An Introduction to Resilience and Wellness  \nSession 2 (October 7) – Exploring our Self-Talk: Cognitive Distortions and Imposter Fears \nSession 3 (October 21) – Self-Advocacy and Assertiveness for Scientists \nSession 4 (November 4) – Developing Feedback Resilience \nSession 5 (November 18) – Managing Up to Maximize Mentoring Relationships \nIf you miss a workshop and want to watch the recording\, please visit the NIH OITE series page for links based on date and topic.
