SUMMARY:Scientific Citizenship: Redefining Science Education in a Divided World
DESCRIPTION:Academia is facing historic challenges. As national leaders attack and politicize our institutions\, the public continues to lose faith in science as a force for good. Now more than ever scientists need to be prepared to navigate the social complexity of their work. Academic leaders\, funders\, and students recognize this challenge and are demanding change. Yet academia is slow to innovate. Since 2020\, Harvard’s Scientific Citizenship Initiative (SCi) has been paving the way for a paradigm shift that prepares scientific leaders by integrating skills for civic engagement into STEM graduate training. This talk will delve into SCi’s innovative training and experiential learning programs and aim to inspire a reimagined approach to scientific training.\n\nJoin the Bovay Program in the History and Ethics of Professional Engineering for a talk by Dr. Daniel Pomeroy\, Co-Director of the Scientific Citizenship Initiative at the Harvard Medical School.\nJoin the event and brown bag\n\nTitle: Scientific Citizenship: Redefining Science Education in a Divided World\nDate and Time: Thursday\, March 14\, 2024 at 3:30pm to 4:30pm\nLocation: Phillips Hall\, 219\n\nThe talk is free and open to all.\n\nFor interested faculty\, postdocs\, and graduate students\, there will be a brown bag discussion with Dr. Pomeroy on March 15 at 12:00 noon. Register here: https://bit.ly/Pomeroy24\n\nAbout SCi\n\n\nSCi is a lab that develops new curriculum and experiential learning opportunities for STEM graduate students. The lab creates\, tests\, and exports innovative educational programs to enhance professional careers and elevate the depth and degree of meaningful interactions between STEM practitioners and society. Dr. Pomeroy will speak about SCi’s vision of scientific citizenship\, and how their innovative simulation-based pedagogy engages students in thinking about ethical and civic issues in science and technology\, from gene editing to geoengineering.

SUMMARY:CBE Spring Seminar with Judge John Murphy
DESCRIPTION:How a Cornell Chemical Engineer Became a Federal Judge\, and the Lessons Learned Along the Way\nIn this talk\, Judge Murphy will trace his path from Olin Hall to the halls of justice\, and share a few insights he’s had over the years.  Loosely under that umbrella\, he’ll cover topics like: (i) how the law works (from the perspective of an engineer); (ii) careers in law; (iii) unexpected connections among the fields of law\, science\, and engineering; (iv) some of the challenges facing our legal system at the intersection of law and science; and\, of course\, (v) why an education in chemical engineering really does prepare you for anything.  For more information\, view the Cornell events calendar listing. \nAbout the Speaker\nJohn Murphy (ChemE ’99) is a judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.  Before being appointed to the court in 2022 by President Biden\, Judge Murphy was an intellectual property litigation partner at the law firm of Baker & Hostetler in Philadelphia\, where he focused on patent\, copyright\, trademark\, and trade secret disputes\, as well as advising clients on the development and strategic business uses of intellectual property.  He represented plaintiffs and defendants in about equal number in district courts around the country and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit\, as well as the U.S. International Trade Commission\, arbitration panels\, and mediators.  His representations involved commercial packaging\, orthopedic medical devices and materials\, chemical and biological therapeutics\, tablet and telephone hardware\, semiconductor manufacturing\, and cryptographic software\, among others.  Judge Murphy teaches patent litigation and strategy as an adjunct professor at both Villanova Law School and Rutgers Law School.  He is co-author of the fifth edition of Patent Litigation and Strategy (West 2017) along with Federal Circuit Chief Judge Kimberly A. Moore and Professor Timothy Holbrook.  Judge Murphy also clerked for Chief Judge Moore early in his career.  He graduated from Harvard Law School\, where he was editor-in-chief of the Harvard Journal of Law and Technology and an active member of the Harvard Mediation Program.  Before that\, he obtained a Ph.D. in chemical engineering at Caltech.  There\, he worked in the laboratory of Professor Mark E. Davis on a thesis entitled “Methods for Collection and Processing of Gene Expression Data.”  Judge Murphy spent four happy years studying at Cornell University\, graduating with B.S.\, summa cum laude\, in Chemical Engineering in 1999.

SUMMARY:Careers for PhDs: Science Writing
DESCRIPTION:You enrolled in a STEM doctoral program because you love science. But if you’re like a large proportion of your fellow PhD students\, you may be rethinking whether a bench scientist career is for you. Science writing\, and science communication more generally\, can offer a great way to keep the wonder of science at the forefront of your work\, while affording a breadth of engagement with scientific discovery unavailable in a hyperspecialized research career. Numerous and varied opportunities exist in a wide range of employment sectors\, from academia\, industry and government to healthcare\, journalism and freelancing. A panel of PhD-holding science communicators will discuss these paths\, their daily work lives\, and ways current PhD students can explore and prepare for careers in the field. \nCareers Beyond Academia invites you to REGISTER HERE \nThe panelists:\nBethany Brookshire (PhD\, Physiology and Pharmacology\, Wake Forest U.\, 2010)\, Freelance science writer and podcaster\, author of Pests: How Humans Create Animal Villains (Ecco\, 2022). \n  \nJill Sakai (PhD\, Neuroscience\, U. of Wisconsin–Madison\, 2006)\, Freelance science writer and Assistant Managing Editor\, Science News Explores \n  \nAshley Smart (PhD\, Chemical Engineering\, Northwestern U.\, 2007)\, Associate Director\, Knight Science Journalism Program\, MIT\, and Senior Editor\, Undark Magazine \n  \nSponsored by Syracuse University

Training activities may include role-play\, mini lectures\, reading/discussion\, hands-on writing blog posts and other outreach materials\, real-time practice being interviewed for the media\, and discussion with invited speakers. Several guest speakers will be featured throughout the weekend. The below public panel discussion on Opportunities in Science Communication kicks off the COMM 5660 course and is held Friday 4:30-6:30pm. The weekend workshop runs 9-5pm Saturday and Sunday. Lunch is on your own. Must attend all three sessions for credit. \nLearning Objectives:\nAfter participating in this workshop\, students will be able to: \nDiscuss science communication opportunities\, both within traditional scientific careers and as standalone careers\nBegin identifying characteristics of potential audiences for science communication\nWrite drafts of short texts (such as blog posts\, tweets\, and similar items) for non-scientific audiences\nBegin planning for media interviews\nDiscuss social\, ethical\, and scholarly issues associated with science communication\nCredit:\nTo get credit for the class you must attend all sessions. Enroll now via class roster. If past the add/drop deadline\, please email Susi Varvayanis (sv27@cornell.edu) with your Cornell netID. \nTestimonial:\n“One of the most engaging Careers Beyond Academia/BEST experiences for me was a science communication workshop that I attended taught by Bruce Lewenstein. This was an excellent crash course on science communication and forced me to think through how the public receives and perceives scientific news and how I could best communicate my own work to the public without over complicating it.”-Felicity Emerson\, Biomedical and Biological Sciences \nSupported by Cornell’s Department of Communication and Careers Beyond Academia in the Graduate School.
