SUMMARY:Finding Your Research Voice workshop
DESCRIPTION:Two days August 19 & 20 (9am-4pm both days\, must attend both)\n\nRegister now before August 9\nComplete the online registration form to hold a spot on the roster. To confirm a spot in the workshop\, submit your video link as directed below in step 2; it will serve as your confirmation of attending both days of the workshop. Questions can be directed via email to: sv27@cornell.edu. \nLocation will be face-to-face in Clark Hall 247 on Monday August 19 and Tuesday August 20. Sessions are only held in person and participants must commit to attending both full days. If you were to pay professionals for this kind of training after leaving Cornell\, registration would be at least $500-$1\,000. Thanks to sponsorship by Cornell Graduate School’s Careers Beyond Academia\, the cost to you is nothing! \nLocation will be on central campus in Clark Hall 247. Lunch will be provided both days thanks to the continued support of our partners in Cornell’s Technology Licensing Office. \nAbout the workshop\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearning to tell a compelling research story can have a significant impact on your career. It can make you stand out at professional conferences\, pitch competitions\, on the job market\, or during an ideal networking opportunity. It is easy to tell a research story badly. We provide specific presentation ideas and field tested exercises that will help you improve your talk. Once you’ve learned how to create a dynamic live performance of your research story\, you may come to enjoy presenting in public. \nThis workshop will intensively work your own research presentation and hone your engaging story through a core message. We incorporate theatrical/improv techniques and video feedback to improve your use of body\, voice\, gesture and to capture wording that resonates with your audience. These workshops have led to a published book that summarizes the exercises and serves as a step-by-step guide to Finding Your Research Voice – Storytelling and Theatre Skills for Bringing Your Presentation to Life. It is fully accessible through the Cornell Library System. \n \n“There are faculty who give terrible talks\, and some who make captivating\, engaging talks. I want to be in the latter category. That’s why I signed up for this workshop.”–Benjamin Rosche\, PhD student\, Sociology” \nThis opportunity is open to PhD students and postdocs in all disciplines\, with priority given to those who are ready to present their research. Time: 9 am to 4 pm Monday Aug. 19 and Tuesday Aug. 20\, with an hour lunch break. You must attend both sessions. Due to the intensive\, personalized\, mentored interactions during the workshop\, participation numbers are limited. \nThis two-day workshop is designed for any grad student or postdoc in the social sciences\, STEM\, humanities and arts disciplines interested in an immersion to improve their research communication skills. \n“We were an image-oriented species way before development of the written word. The way we include pictures in our presentations can determine if a story will bring us together.”–Itai Cohen\, Professor\, Physics \nLearning outcomes for Finding Your Research Voice:\nCreating a Core Message\nApplying the Dramatic Arc\nConnecting with Your Audience\nExpressing Passion for Your Research\nFinding a Great Beginning\nChaptering Your Story\nSignaling the End\nImproving Your Voice\nControlling Your Body Language\nIncorporating Gesture Effectively \nIn advance of the workshop:\n\nRecord your 10 minute research talk draft and upload it to YouTube (if you have a previously recorded talk that’s fine\, just the first 10 minutes will be viewed). Don’t worry about professional quality\, it can be done informally on your computer with Zoom. Make sure the audio can be heard. Ideally your slides are visible and so are you as you speak. Your 10 minute talk should cover something you would present at a conference\, perhaps in a longer format. An hour long talk is often comprised of three separate but linked 10 minute talks. Choose the research/scholarly/business idea that you are most passionate about as the subject for your talk. Make sure you do not disclose any proprietary information (hopefully you consider this with every talk).\nSend the video link before August 9 to confirm your attendance to Itai Cohen (itai.cohen@cornell.edu) and Susi Varvayanis (sv27@cornell.edu). Prior to the workshop we will review your talk\, speak generically about what we see during the workshop\, and offer you concrete tips for improvement individually. This is an essential way you will get the most out of this workshop! Please honor this deadline so we have sufficient time to review all submissions.\nDraft a 1 minute (approximate) Elevator Pitch of your core research message to bring to the workshop. We will use your Elevator Pitch to hone your core message and to work on your performance skills. It should include who you are\, what you do\, what you’ve found\, and why it is important. This is a short persuasive speech about you and your work. It should last no longer than an elevator ride (30 seconds to 2 minutes) and should be carefully crafted to maximize both information and interest during short encounters with important contacts. An elevator pitch is a 3-4 sentence summary of the main point of your talk. Briefly:\n\n\n\n\nIdentify the problem and why it is so important\nExplain why this has not yet been solved\nExplain how you will solve and why you are the person to do it\n\n\n\nFacilitated by:\nItai Cohen\, Professor of Physics\nCornell University\nhttp://cohengroup.lassp.cornell.edu\nitai.cohen@cornell.edu 617-304-2131 \n  \nSusi Varvayanis\, Executive Director\nCareers Beyond Academia\nCornell University Graduate School \ngradcareers@cornell.edu \n  \nAccessibility Requests:\nWe strive to make our events accessible to all community members. Individuals who would like to request accessibility accommodations should contact gradcareers@cornell.edu. We ask that requests be made sufficiently in advance to help ensure they can be met.

SUMMARY:Vaccination Conversations with Scientists (VaCS)
DESCRIPTION:VaCS connects scientists with community members to engage in conversations with people in the Ithaca and surrounding communities about the COVID-19 vaccine and other critical vaccinations. It began in 2021 as a grad student-led initiative as part of ASAP\, and is now transitioning to become a non-profit organization. \nTraditional public health messaging alone is insufficient to promote uptake of COVID-19 vaccines; among New York State residents\, less than 12 % are completely up to date with their COVID-19 vaccinations. VaCS members help build trust between scientists and the community by initiating compassionate conversations about vaccines with people in our local area to promote educated heath decisions. \nIf you attended ASAP’s first event this year–a really interesting discussion with science communication educator and former Congressional Chief of Staff Mark Bayer–Mark talked a lot about how to leverage your position as a scientist to combat misinformation. You can put this into practice for a good cause by volunteering with VaCS! No specific vaccine or immunology background is necessary; we provide robust training and materials on vaccine and COVID-19 science\, combatting misinformation\, and science communication. \nGrad Student & Staff Orientation Meeting\nWeill Hall Room 226 on Sept. 19 @ 6pm\nLearn more about VaCS and how you can get involved. For more info\, register on CampusGroups here\, or visit the VaCS website. Hope to see you there! \nKara Rode Webber\, VaCS Co-Director \nWhat does VaCS do?\nVaCS is a collaboration between several county departments of health and Cornell Advancing Science and Policy\, with funding support from the Provost’s Office. Our goal is to engage the community and answer questions about vaccine safety and COVID-19. We reach people through phone-banking (remote/hybrid) and tabling/canvassing (in-person). \nWho can join?\nScientists of any level are welcome: grad students\, postdocs\, advanced undergraduates\, laboratory staff\, and faculty! Scientists at the Ithaca Campus and at Weill Cornell are all invited to join. \nWhat is the time commitment?\nIt’s up to you! We expect that you will attend at least 1 event per month\, however your commitment is flexible. You can also get more involved by joining VaCS leadership to help with behind-the-scenes work\, such as organizing events and managing the data. \nWhat are some types of outreach opportunities?\n\ntabling at community events\nphone-banking (virtual–held twice a week)\ndoor-to-door canvassing\ninformation sessions\n\nWhat has VaCS accomplished so far?\nWe have made over 10\,000 phone calls\, have a network of over 100 Cornell scientists\, and hosted numerous tabling and canvassing events jointly with the Tompkins County Health Department\, Cayuga Medical Center\, and health departments from surrounding counties. \nWhile it might seem like an impossible task\, 29% of our conversations with unvaccinated people have actually increased the self-reported likelihood of vaccination! \nYou do NOT need to be an expert in COVID-19! We will provide training to prepare you on the science\, as well as communication strategies to deal with controversial topics.

SUMMARY:Cornell Career Fair Days
DESCRIPTION:Career Fair Days provides a forum for Cornellians to meet with more than 250 employers over a two-day period. A wide variety of employers attend\, ranging from Fortune 500 companies to government and not-for-profit organizations. These organizations attend Cornell University’s Career Fair Days to increase visibility\, to illustrate the benefits of employment in their organization\, and to provide information to Cornell students about entry- level jobs\, co-op opportunities\, and internships. Many of these organizations also participate through Cornell’s On-Campus Recruiting Program and use Career Fair Days as a kick-off for their recruiting season. Others attend to introduce Cornell students to their organization; some collect resumes for future openings. \nSeptember 24 and 25 @11am-4pm both days in Barton Hall \nMore info and how to register via Handshake \nTips to make the best use of Career Fair Days\nBefore:\n\nReview relevant modules in the Career Development Toolkit\, especially the module on in-person Career Fair tips to help you prepare\nUpdate Your Resume: Prepare a strong resume to bring with you (bring 15-20 copies) that highlights your experience and transferrable skills\, and is not too narrowly focused\nResearch employers on Handshake & plan your time to make a strategy for which employers you want to speak with\nDownload the Handshake app to your phone so you can capture QR codes and other information as you meet employers\nPrepare your introduction (aka Elevator Pitch): Practice how you want to spend the 1-2 minutes you will have to speak with a recruiter. Let them know who you are and what you are interested in. Include your name\, degree and when you will graduate\, field of study\, career interests\, and why you are interested in them specifically\nPrepare questions to ask recruiters at the fair\nDress the part: Recommended attire is business professional\, however business casual is okay as well. Review the module on Dressing Professionally for more information\nMeet with a career advisor: schedule an appointment with a full-time or peer advisor\n\nDuring:\n\nDitch your backpack: Find the designated areas for bags and jackets and leave your non-essentials behind\nGreet the recruiters: Make eye contact\, have a firm but not crushing handshake\, and launch into your introduction. Be sure to pause so the exchange is more of a discussion/conversation vs. a monologue. Listen intently to their response and follow up with some tailored questions.\nAsk for the appropriate contact person and email to followup\n\nAfter:\nFollow Up: Be sure to send an email to employers who interest you\, thank them specifically (reference your conversation)\, and ask potential questions \nAnother way to get involved with the career fair is to volunteer! Check out opportunities with your career office staff.
