A former AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow\, Yaihara holds a Ph.D. in Neuroscience and is an active and engaged leader in scientific training and workforce development. \nAbout the speaker\n\n\n\n\n\nYaihara Fortis Santiago\, PhD\n\n\n\nDr. Fortis Santiago holds a bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Puerto Rico at Río Piedras and a PhD in Neuroscience from Brandeis University. In 2014\, she joined the New York Academy of Sciences\, where she created the first leadership program for STEM graduate students: the Science Alliance Leadership Training. DESCRIPTION:The College of Arts and Sciences is hosting alumna Dr. Alison Miller on Tuesday\, July 15. Dr. Miller authored the book Finish Your Dissertation: Once and for All! and co-founded a virtual co-working community for graduate students and other academic professionals called The Academic Writers’ Space. She is focused on helping people shift from hustle and overwhelm to Relaxed Productivity\, a way of working that honors productivity\, purpose\, and well-being. Her approach is rooted in both science and lived experience. She holds a BA from Cornell and a PhD in Clinical Psychology from University of Illinois Chicago\, and has 25 years of entrepreneurial leadership\, including founding and leading The Dissertation Coach\, which helped over 15\,000 people earn their doctoral degrees before she sold the company after 24 years of impact. \nIn addition to presenting to undergraduate Nexus Scholars in their professional development class\, the Graduate School and Arts and Sciences Career Development are delighted to offer 1:1 meetings and an Academic Writing Process small group conversation hosted by Dr. Miller in the afternoon. She works closely with patients\, families\, and multidisciplinary teams to provide compassionate\, evidence-based care that supports seizure management and overall well-being. Wing earned her Ph.D. in Nutrition Sciences from Cornell in 2022. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nYingyu Liu joined Cell Press in 2021\, now working as an editor for the journal Cell Host & Microbe and supporting researchers across various journals. She received her doctoral degree from Cornell University in 2020\, studying the relationship between plants and pathogens. She is Director of Research at Mockingbird Analytics\, a Visiting Professor at UC Berkeley\, and serves on the Board of Drag Performers United. Her work integrates trauma-informed and participatory action research to explore how identity shapes access to space and services. She holds a Ph.D. in Urban Planning & Development from the University of Southern California and a M.R.P. from Cornell University. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nMariangela Mihai\, Ph.D. is a political and visual anthropologist whose work bridges generative AI\, collaborative documentary\, and social justice. She is an Assistant Professor at Western Washington University\, a Red Teamer on Meta’s Generative AI Trust Team\, and co-founder of the Ethnocine Film Collective\, where she produces feminist films and impact campaigns. Her research and teaching focus on refugee rights\, queer activism\, Indigenous resistance\, and ethical media practices across global contexts. \n  \n

This talk will take an honest look at the challenges faced by PhDs in both academia and industry. I obtained my piano performance degree from the University of Michigan\, went on to receive my PhD in social psychology\, and completed my postdoc at UC San Diego. Faced with an abysmal job market in the middle of a pandemic\, I did what every other academic did: breaking into industry and getting myself a good ol’ 9-to-5. I worked at Amazon\, Meta\, and Match. I was rewarded with a great salary. I was also deeply unfulfilled. I discovered a world of people living life outside the box\, academics outside of traditional academia\, who create and attract opportunities that come to them\, not the other way around. I realized: Wealth is abundant. Paths are infinite. You are in the driver’s seat of designing the life you want to live. DESCRIPTION:MSE Seminar Series \nDate: Thursday\, September 18\, 2025\nTime: 4:00pm\nLocation: Kimball B11 \nAbout the speaker\nLeo Schowalter was employed by the GE Global Research Center after receiving his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Illinois in 1981.  He was a professor in the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Physics Department from 1987 and became Department Chair in 1997\, the same year that he co-founded Crystal IS with another former GE colleague. Crystal IS commercialized single-crystal AlN substrates and UVC LEDs based on pseudomorphic AlGaN on these substrates for disinfection and instrumentation applications.  Crystal IS was acquired by Asahi Kasei in 2011 and is now a wholly owned subsidiary. \nStarting in 2017\, Dr. Schowalter was appointed the Asahi Kasei Innovative Devices Industry-Academia Collaborative Chair at Nagoya U. This team\, led by Prof. Amano and with Asahi Kasei and Crystal IS support\, announced the world’s first UVC laser diode in 2019 and\, in early 2020\, announced the best performance for far UVC LEDs in the 230nm to 240nm wavelength range. Dr. Schowalter continues the collaboration with Prof. Amano as a Visiting Professor but has also now joined the Florida-based startup company Visium (formally Lit Thinking) which is developing cost-effective far UVC for human-safe disinfection of shared spaces.  Most recently\, he has established the Visium Ultralabs in the Cornell Tech Park to further push the AlGaN ultrawide bandgap semiconductors into the far-UVC. \nAbstract\nThe development of AlGaN ultrawide bandgap (UWBG) semiconductors on native AlN substrates for UVC and far UVC device applications \nUltrawide bandgap semiconductors (bandgaps greater than 4.5 eV) have attracted recent attention for new applications in high power switches (EV and smart grid) and high-power rf.  UWBG semiconductors are also being used to make novel light emitters at wavelengths shorter than 280nm. However\, the UWBG semiconductors still present big challenges in growth and doping.  One of the best examples are the pseudomorphic AlGaN alloys gown on high quality AlN substrates where 2-inch diameter is now widely available and 100mm are being sampled. These single-crystal AlN substrates have enabled growth of high quality Al1-xGaxN alloys that are pseudomorphically strained to match the lattice of the underlying AlN substrate. The low extended defect density has made it possible to take advantage of a new kind of conductivity (distributed polarization doping) made possible in materials that have a spontaneous polarization.  Most significantly\, p-type Al1-xGaxN has now been demonstrated in Al1-xGaxN without the use of impurity doping.  This breakthrough solved the critical problem of unacceptable resistivities in the doped layers with increasing band gap (particularly for p-type dopants). \nPseudomorphic growth and distributed polarization doping have made the achievement of new devices possible\, such as the UVC laser diode which we first demonstrated in 2019 as part of a Asahi Kasei/Nagoya University joint effort.  These laser diodes open new possibilities for optical instruments which will benefit from very compact sources of radiation which are coherent and nearly monochromatic. It is also possible to precisely direct laser radiation in ways that simply are not possible for LEDs.  As this technology develops\, it may even be possible to achieve higher wall plug efficiencies than are achievable with UVC LEDs due to improved photon extraction efficiencies. However\, the lifetime of these diodes (which operate at much higher current densities than LEDs) is still an important issue that needs to be addressed. \nFinally\, I would like to introduce our new UWBG semiconductor effort at the Visium UltraLabs in the Cornell Tech Park to enable far UVC (shorter than 235nm) LEDs.

Amin\, PhD\,is an Executive Director in Nonclinical Drug Safety at Merck. He has 23 years of experience from both small and large pharmaceutical companies across various aspects of toxicology\, investigative toxicology\, nonclinical drug discovery and development across multiple therapeutic areas and modalities. Rup has successfully supported the advancement of Cardiometabolic\, Anti-inflammatory\, Oncology and RNA therapeutic drugs. In his current role as Head of Program Development\, Dr. Amin provides nonclinical drug safety scientific\, operational\, and strategic oversight for Merck’s development programs across all therapeutic areas and modalities. His team supports programs entering Phase 1 through registration and post-marketing\, ensuring nonclinical drug safety aspects support the clinical program. Additionally\, Dr. Amin’s team provides oversight of Occupational Toxicology aspects of Merck’s portfolio. This involves critically assessing the potential hazardous effects of chemicals and drugs to guide the implementation of measures to protect employee health and safety. Before joining industry in 2002\, Dr. Amin completed a Ph.D. in Toxicology at the Joint Graduate Program in Toxicology at Rutgers University/Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He further pursued a post-doctoral fellowship applying toxicogenomic approaches to elucidate molecular mechanisms in drug-induced renal toxicity and studied cell cycle defects at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Rup enjoys travelling\, hiking and exploring diverse cuisines with his wife and 3 kids.  \nMelissa Dsouza\, PhD\, is a Director in Digital Operations and Innovation within Nonclinical Drug Safety at Merck Research Labs. She specializes in applying data science and machine learning to drug safety assessment. She earned her Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Auckland in New Zealand in 2015\, where she also completed her B.Tech in Biotechnology with First-Class Honors. \nWith over 10 years of experience spanning academia and the microbiome industry\, Melissa brings her expertise in bioinformatics\, microbial ecology\, and statistical modeling to her role at Merck. Before joining Merck in 2021\, she held leadership positions at microbiome therapeutics companies\, including Vedanta Biosciences and Commense Inc.\, where she developed novel analytical methods for microbial drug characterization and led clinical bioinformatics efforts supporting Phase 1/2 trials for live biotherapeutic products. At Merck\, she provides technical leadership for data science initiatives\, builds predictive models using diverse datasets\, and collaborates across research teams to develop AI solutions for drug safety assessment. She is passionate about leveraging historical datasets and advanced analytics to generate meaningful insights that advance drug development. \nKara Pearson\, PhD’00 Chemistry\, is the Director of Analytical & Biochemical Toxicology in the Investigative Toxicology group within Nonclinical Drug Safety at Merck where she manages a group of analytical chemists\, biochemists and cell biologists who perform investigative studies to understand mechanisms of toxicity and support development of alternative models for safety testing. During her 24 years in Nonclinical Drug Safety\, Kara has worked at the bench\, lead interdepartmental investigations into mechanisms of toxicity\, and served as a departmental representative to program Discovery and Development Teams. The challenges of drug development are always evolving\, so interdisciplinary collaboration is key to our success and one of the most rewarding aspects of the job. Ensuring the safety of our new therapeutics is another.  Kara completed her PhD in bioorganic chemistry at Cornell University in 2000 and followed that with postdoctoral research in the NIH’s National Heart\, Lung and Blood Institute Lab of Biophysical Chemistry before joining the Merck team. \nKristen A. Roosa\, PhD’15 Biological and Biomedical Sciences is an Associate Principal Scientist in the Developmental and Reproductive Toxicology group\, part of the Nonclinical Drug Safety division\, at Merck. She conducts animal studies to assess potential risks of new pharmaceuticals to human fertility\, embryo-fetal and postnatal development and serves as a subject matter expert for teams developing strategies for nonclinical safety assessment programs. She completed her PhD in the Biological and Biomedical Sciences program at Cornell in 2015\, started her career in academia at a primarily undergraduate institution\, and then made the move to industry in 2021. \nKetal Shah\, BA\, is an Associate Principal Scientist at Merck with over two decades of experience in the pharmaceutical\, biotechnology\, and CRO sectors. She specializes in biochemistry\, molecular biology\, and immuno-analytical techniques\, with a strong track record of leading outsourcing collaborations and advancing complex research programs. Throughout her career\, Ketal has held scientific roles at Roche\, Elusys Therapeutics\, Ortho Clinical Diagnostics\, and Tandem Labs before joining Merck in 2014. She is recognized for her critical thinking\, problem-solving skills\, and ability to build effective cross-functional partnerships in fast-paced environments.
