SUMMARY:NYAS Webinar: Career Paths: Funding & Grantsmanship
DESCRIPTION:The ability to write successful research grants is a skill that needs to be worked on. As university budgets are shrinking and external funding sources are becoming more and more competitive\, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows and scientists should gain experience in this critical skill of successful grant writing early in their careers by applying for extramural funding\, especially individual fellowships. Grant writing is a skill that requires guidance and advice from those who have successfully applied for these type of grants. In fact\, grant writing can be more difficult than the actual research proposed. Join Science Alliance for “Transition to Research Independence: Funding and Grantsmanship” to learn the skills for concise and persuasive writing that is not only vital in academia\, but essential for any career path. During this evening seminar given by Dr. Jaime Rubin and follow up by a panel with recipients of these fellowships\, we will focus on best practices for effective grant writing\, specifically applied to individual pre-doctoral and post-doctoral fellowship applications in the biomedical fields. \nDuring this seminar you will learn about: \n\nTypes of funding agencies (government and private)\nTypes of private agencies (e.g. voluntary health organizations\, professional societies\, private foundations)\nReview criteria for fellowship applications\nKey components of fellowship applications\nStrategic approaches for competitive applications\nCommon but overlooked mistakes made by new investigators\nTips to increase your chances for success\n\nFollowing the seminar\, we will have a panel discussion with graduate students and postdocs who have successfully applied for various types of individual fellowships. \nRegister online for the webinar. \nSign up for free a Membership to the New York Academy of Sciences\nTo support your professional and career development\, Cornell University will sponsor a complimentary 1-year Membership to the New York Academy of Sciences for any interested undergraduate and graduate student\, postdoc\, faculty and staff member. For over 200 years\, the Academy has helped scientists\, engineers\, and innovators pursue successful careers.  To request a sponsored membership\, sign up at NYAS.ORG/CORNELL

SUMMARY:Careers for PhDs: UX Research
DESCRIPTION:Among the most rapidly growing and dynamic job sectors in which to apply your doctoral-level research background is the UX (User Experience) domain. PhDs in the humanities and humanistic social sciences bring a combination of analytic\, problem-solving\, and communication skills in high demand for UX positions across a huge range of fields and settings. A panel of PhD-holding UX researchers will describe their current and former work in the sector (including tech industry\, nonprofits\, government\, health care\, VR\, ed tech\, consulting and more) and how they leveraged their doctoral training to access this rewarding and intellectually stimulating career path. \nThis event is sponsored by the Central New York Humanities Corridor from an award by the Mellon Foundation. \nThe panelists\nEmily Levitt\, UX Researcher\, Google (Cornell PhD\, Cultural Anthropology) \nAshley Ruba\, UX Researcher\, Meta Reality Labs (U of Washington PhD\, Psychology\, 2019) \nLina Žigelytė\, Senior UX Researcher\, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (U of Rochester PhD\, Visual & Cultural Studies\, 2017) \nRegister to attend! \nAbout the Central NY Humanities Corridor\nThe Central NY Humanities Corridor is a  dynamic research consortium linking 11 universities and colleges across the region\, supported by an award from the Mellon Foundation. Our network cultivates innovative collaborative research\, teaching\, and programming. CORRIDOR INSTITUTIONS are Syracuse University (our administrative home)\, Cornell University\, the University of Rochester\, Colgate University\, Hamilton College\, Hobart and William Smith Colleges\, Skidmore College\, St. Lawrence University\, Union College\, Le Moyne College\, and the Rochester Institute of Technology. \nIndigenous Land Acknowledgement\nThis land acknowledgement is a first step in explicitly recognizing sovereignty and the ongoing history of dispossession of Indigenous peoples. \nSince location is core to our identity\, in name and in practice\, the CNY Humanities Corridor acknowledges\, with respect\, that our 11-institution consortium spans the ancestral lands and waterways of the Haudenosaunee people. Corridor partnerships take place on lands of the nations of the sovereign Haudenosaunee Confederacy\, founded at least 1\,000 years ago at Onondaga Lake. Central New York remains home to the Haudenosaunee: we acknowledge the ongoing history of dispossession across the Confederacy\, and are grateful to live\, work\, and share ideas on these lands.
