DESCRIPTION:Academia is facing historic challenges. As national leaders attack and politicize our institutions\, the public continues to lose faith in science as a force for good. Now more than ever scientists need to be prepared to navigate the social complexity of their work. Academic leaders\, funders\, and students recognize this challenge and are demanding change. Yet academia is slow to innovate. Since 2020\, Harvard’s Scientific Citizenship Initiative (SCi) has been paving the way for a paradigm shift that prepares scientific leaders by integrating skills for civic engagement into STEM graduate training. SUMMARY:CBE Spring Seminar with Judge John Murphy
DESCRIPTION:How a Cornell Chemical Engineer Became a Federal Judge\, and the Lessons Learned Along the Way\nIn this talk\, Judge Murphy will trace his path from Olin Hall to the halls of justice\, and share a few insights he’s had over the years.  Loosely under that umbrella\, he’ll cover topics like: (i) how the law works (from the perspective of an engineer); (ii) careers in law; (iii) unexpected connections among the fields of law\, science\, and engineering; (iv) some of the challenges facing our legal system at the intersection of law and science; and\, of course\, (v) why an education in chemical engineering really does prepare you for anything.  For more information\, view the Cornell events calendar listing. \nAbout the Speaker\nJohn Murphy (ChemE ’99) is a judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.  Before being appointed to the court in 2022 by President Biden\, Judge Murphy was an intellectual property litigation partner at the law firm of Baker & Hostetler in Philadelphia\, where he focused on patent\, copyright\, trademark\, and trade secret disputes\, as well as advising clients on the development and strategic business uses of intellectual property.  He represented plaintiffs and defendants in about equal number in district courts around the country and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit\, as well as the U.S. International Trade Commission\, arbitration panels\, and mediators.  His representations involved commercial packaging\, orthopedic medical devices and materials\, chemical and biological therapeutics\, tablet and telephone hardware\, semiconductor manufacturing\, and cryptographic software\, among others.  Judge Murphy teaches patent litigation and strategy as an adjunct professor at both Villanova Law School and Rutgers Law School.  He is co-author of the fifth edition of Patent Litigation and Strategy (West 2017) along with Federal Circuit Chief Judge Kimberly A. Moore and Professor Timothy Holbrook.  Judge Murphy also clerked for Chief Judge Moore early in his career.  He graduated from Harvard Law School\, where he was editor-in-chief of the Harvard Journal of Law and Technology and an active member of the Harvard Mediation Program.  Before that\, he obtained a Ph.D. in chemical engineering at Caltech.  There\, he worked in the laboratory of Professor Mark E. Davis on a thesis entitled “Methods for Collection and Processing of Gene Expression Data.”  Judge Murphy spent four happy years studying at Cornell University\, graduating with B.S.\, summa cum laude\, in Chemical Engineering in 1999.

SUMMARY:MedTech Innovations: Leveraging Cornell Alumni Expertise
DESCRIPTION:Careers Beyond Academia and the Center for Technology Licensing bring together alumni in the medical device space to provide a holistic view of that industry. The objective is to explore how established corporations and startup companies push forward medical device innovations into the market. \nOur panel of guest speakers—industry-experienced alumni and professionals\, and Cornell-affiliated startup founders —will share their expertise and experiences to highlight the diverse avenues to commercialization. DESCRIPTION:We are holding this information session to promote awareness of the variety of career possibilities in policy\, inform on the timelines of the Science & Technology Policy Fellowship (STPF) process\, and help connect you with the resources and networks to increase success. \nShould you participate?\nAre you interested in having a greater impact with your education and training\, and are passionate about policy? Are you curious about the types and placements of science policy fellows at the federal\, state\, and local level in the different branches of government and government agencies? Do you wonder about the areas of policies that align with your doctoral research and field of study? What does the life of a Fellow look like? How would you set yourself apart as a potential candidate? Learn about the application process and timing for a science and technology policy fellowship\, and how to grow your network of professionals and alumni who can help guide you. \nSpeakers\, facilitators and organizers:\nKorie Grayson PhD’20 MS’17 is a AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow at the National Science Foundation’s Technology\, Innovation\, and Partnerships Directorate established by the 2022 Chips & Science Act. Monitors performance and develops strategies for Experiential Learning for the Emerging and Novel Technologies program\, an $18.8 million investment to 27 teams\, to support experiential learning opportunities for individuals interested in emerging tech fields. \nEmily Laurilliard PhD Candidate (May ’24 expected) in biomedical engineering\, New York State coalition lead for the National Science Policy Network (NSPN) Science on the Ballot Initiative\, part of the New York State Science and Technology (NYSST) Policy Network to advocate for a state policy fellowship\, President of Advancing Science and Policy and recent recipient of a NYS STPF placed in the Executive Branch. \nMartin Liu PhD’22 is a AAAS STPF fellow placed at the National Science Foundation\, within the Directorate for Biological Sciences. He leads a new prize competition at NSF; works on CASA-Bio\, an interagency R&D coordination activity to roadmap innovation for the bioeconomy; and participates in the NobleReach Emerge pilot to accelerate biotechnology innovation from lab to market. At Cornell\, he researched hemp seed protein under the advisement of Dr. Alireza Abbaspourrad in the Department of Food Science. \nChris Schaffer is Associate Professor at Cornell and former AAAS Congressional Science Policy Fellow in the U.S. House of Representatives in Rep.
