SUMMARY:ASAP Collaborative Science Policy Work Sessions
DESCRIPTION:We started Cornell ASAP’s contribution to the NSPN 2020 Election Initiative with two meta-reviews: \n\nRegulating Genetic Modification Technology Outside Healthcare\, and\nCoastal Flooding and Resilience. \n\nWe modeled our efforts on NSPN’s recently published reports\, which can be found here\, but there’s still a long way to go! To that end\, we have scheduled two additional events: \n\nTuesday\, 10/8 at 6-9 pm to finalize our reports and prepare for external collaborations in the future.\nWednesday\, 10/23 at 6-9 pm to launch our advocacy efforts in these areas.\n\nBoth meetings will be held in Room 100 Mann Library. \nPlease RSVP with the following link: 10/23 work session RSVP. \nAnyone is welcome to join the collaboration for as much or as little time as they can spare; no problem if you couldn’t attend the previous event. \nFeel free to contact Andy Sanchez (aps268) with any questions\, and don’t forget to sign up for the 2019 NSPN Symposium\, with our 50% registration discount code: 2019NSPSMD! \nAbout Advancing Science And Policy (ASAP)\nCornell Advancing Science and Policy (ASAP) is a group of graduate students\, postdocs\, and faculty interested in the intersection of science and policy. We engage our members in the policymaking process and educate the public about the role of scientific input in advancing society. \nVisit the ASAP website and connect via ASAP Facebook page or email cornellasap@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Baptism by fire: Oh I mean a systematic approach to talking good
DESCRIPTION:Science is so much more than lab tests\, experiments and analysis – it’s about our ability to resonate with peers\, media\, decision makers\, industry\, and the public. Perhaps more than ever\, communicating our science effectively and succinctly can be the difference between making an impact vs. missing opportunities to make the world a better place. This workshop will focus on science communication – drawing from lessons learned and hands-on training opportunities. Case studies\, data on communication\, and the “message box” will be discussed\, all in a highly participatory and interactive way. All fields are welcome — from novices to experts — and be prepared to be an active participant! \nDr. Ben Houlton is the Director of the John Muir Institute of the Environment at the University of California. This  two-hour workshop for graduate students and post docs will focus on science communication and being an effective scientist in the 21st century. \nTo register please contact Jed Sparks jps66@cornell.edu \nHosted by Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and Careers Beyond Academia/BEST.  See more events here
