DESCRIPTION:Science is so much more than lab tests\, experiments and analysis – it’s about our ability to resonate with peers\, media\, decision makers\, industry\, and the public. Perhaps more than ever\, communicating our science effectively and succinctly can be the difference between making an impact vs. missing opportunities to make the world a better place. This workshop will focus on science communication – drawing from lessons learned and hands-on training opportunities. Case studies\, data on communication\, and the “message box” will be discussed\, all in a highly participatory and interactive way. All fields are welcome — from novices to experts — and be prepared to be an active participant! \nDr. Ben Houlton is the Director of the John Muir Institute of the Environment at the University of California. DESCRIPTION:Hear about the inner workings of the state government and the role of scientific evidence in policy making\, plus how researchers can be involved in decision making in NYS. \nNo need for registration! Open to the Graduate Community. \n\nOrganized by Advancing Science And Policy (ASAP) Cornell University \nfrom his website: \nOn July 19\, 2019\, John B. Howard was appointed Commissioner of the New York State Public Service Commission (Commission)\, his term runs through February 1\, 2024. Mr. Howard brings over 37 years of New York State service\, serving in various roles in the Legislature and Executive branches\, with vast experience in the energy sector to the Commission. At the New York Power Authority\, he was responsible for monitoring relevant activities at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC)\, Department of Environmental Conservation and the Commission. He served as Executive Deputy Director at the New York State Consumer Protection Board where he oversaw the Board’s utility intervention filings to the Commission\, FERC and the Federal Communications Commission. He was also responsible for the Board’s consumer advocacy and public outreach programs. \nAs Executive Director for then Member of Assembly Paul D. Tonko\, Chair of the Assembly Energy Committee he developed and led the Chairman’s program in energy policy and legislation including low cost energy programs\, electric deregulation\, authority reform and energy taxes. Mr. Howard served as Deputy Chief of Staff to then Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo where he developed and oversaw implementation of the Attorney General’s Community Partnership Initiative and worked on the Attorney Generals’ Wind Energy Industry initiative. \nSince 2011 he served as Director of Chamber Operations to Governor Cuomo where he was responsible for the execution of Governor Cuomo’s public appearances across the State\, requiring detailed knowledge of the Governor’s policy initiatives\, New York’s geo-politics\, including Federal\, State and local officials as well as every State agency and authority. \nOn September 23\, 2019 Commissioner Howard was appointed as member of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners’ Subcommittee on Nuclear Issues-Waste Disposal. \nCommissioner Howard received Bachelor of Science from Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and resides in Duanesburg\, New York.

DESCRIPTION:Alumnus David Fischell\, ’75\, MS ’78\, PhD 80′\, Chairman and CEO Angel Medical Systems\, will be speaking at the Enterprise Engineering Colloquium on October 16 @ 4:30 pm\, B-11 Kimball Hall. \nMedical devices provide an important avenue of therapeutics and diagnostics improving human healthcare. Dr. Fischell is an inventor and serial entrepreneur who has helped found 15 medical device companies over the last 25 years. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Colesworthy will speak to graduate students in the humanities about how she navigated her career beyond the PhD.  She will describe her employment history and work experiences in the nonprofit sector to help students envision the non-linear career path PhDs often follow.  In addition to sharing her career trajectory\, Dr. Colesworthy will: \n\nspeak about the challenges of pursuing research while not affiliated with an academic institution\ngive insights about the writing and publication process from the point of view of an acquisitions editor at an academic press\nadvise students about how to develop skills and seek professional experiences that will enable them to pursue multiple career paths beyond the PhD\nbe available to students for advising after the event\n\nAbout the speaker:\nRebecca Colesworthy received her PhD in English from Cornell in 2009\, and is currently an Acquisitions Editor at SUNY Press where she oversees c19-c21 studies\, gender and queer studies\, Latin American and Latinx studies\, and education. Dr. Colesworthy is also the author of Returning the Gift: Modernism and the Thought of Exchange (Oxford UP 2018)\, and co-editor\, with Peter Nicholls\, of How Abstract Is It? Thinking Capital Now\, published (Routledge 2015). Her work has also appeared in Modernist Cultures\, Angelaki\, Journal of Modern Literature\, and Women’s Studies Quarterly. SUMMARY:Creating an Employer-Ready LinkedIn Profile
DESCRIPTION:We’ll start with a short overview presentation with pro tips on how to use LinkedIn\, some exercises to identify a good tagline\, and a very interactive session where participants work on their own profiles and critique others’ –so you will need to bring your own computer. We plan to send out some handy tips to registrants prior to the event if people want to get even more out of the hands-on session.  \nDue to the interactive nature of the workshop\, we will limit the number to 10-12. So if something comes up after you register\, be sure to let us know so we can invite someone else to take your place. \nThis event is presented by Careers Beyond Academia/BEST. SUMMARY:Sustainable Global Enterprise Immersion Program
DESCRIPTION:The SGE Immersion Program in the Johnson School within the College of Business is now accepting applications from non-Johnson graduate students from any Cornell school/college/program through Friday\, October 11th. \nLaunched in 2006\, the SGE Immersion program provides Cornell graduate students the opportunity to work in multidisciplinary teams on a project with companies and other organizations who are working to solve a strategic problem related to sustainability and business. The program is offered in the spring term. Since the program began\, students have worked with over 100 companies on nearly 120 projects. 25% of the program alumni network is made up of graduates from AAP\, Arts & Sciences\, CALS\, Engineering\, Hotel\, Human Ecology\, and ILR (so far). Graduate students interested in sustainability and the private sector are strongly encouraged to apply! \nAPPLICATION PROCESS: Submit a resume\, a statement of interest\, and one letter of recommendation (academic or professional) tomm462@cornell.edu by end of day\, Friday\, October 11th.
