DESCRIPTION:We are holding this information session to promote awareness of the variety of career possibilities in policy\, inform on the timelines of the Science & Technology Policy Fellowship (STPF) process\, and help connect you with the resources and networks to increase success. \nShould you participate?\nAre you interested in having a greater impact with your education and training\, and are passionate about policy? Are you curious about the types and placements of science policy fellows at the federal\, state\, and local level in the different branches of government and government agencies? Do you wonder about the areas of policies that align with your doctoral research and field of study? What does the life of a Fellow look like? How would you set yourself apart as a potential candidate? Learn about the application process and timing for a science and technology policy fellowship\, and how to grow your network of professionals and alumni who can help guide you. \nSpeakers\, facilitators and organizers:\nKorie Grayson PhD’20 MS’17 is a AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow at the National Science Foundation’s Technology\, Innovation\, and Partnerships Directorate established by the 2022 Chips & Science Act. Monitors performance and develops strategies for Experiential Learning for the Emerging and Novel Technologies program\, an $18.8 million investment to 27 teams\, to support experiential learning opportunities for individuals interested in emerging tech fields. \nEmily Laurilliard PhD Candidate (May ’24 expected) in biomedical engineering\, New York State coalition lead for the National Science Policy Network (NSPN) Science on the Ballot Initiative\, part of the New York State Science and Technology (NYSST) Policy Network to advocate for a state policy fellowship\, President of Advancing Science and Policy and recent recipient of a NYS STPF placed in the Executive Branch. \nMartin Liu PhD’22 is a AAAS STPF fellow placed at the National Science Foundation\, within the Directorate for Biological Sciences. He leads a new prize competition at NSF; works on CASA-Bio\, an interagency R&D coordination activity to roadmap innovation for the bioeconomy; and participates in the NobleReach Emerge pilot to accelerate biotechnology innovation from lab to market. At Cornell\, he researched hemp seed protein under the advisement of Dr. Alireza Abbaspourrad in the Department of Food Science. \nChris Schaffer is Associate Professor at Cornell and former AAAS Congressional Science Policy Fellow in the U.S. House of Representatives in Rep. DESCRIPTION:Learn about different types of industry careers.  Come join this panel discussion and interactive networking session with PhDs who represent various sectors.  The speakers will share their advice\, pros and cons of working in this environment\, and how they transitioned from academia. Come armed with your own questions which will be discussed throughout the session. \nConfirmed speakers: \nBailey Cooper PhD’16\, Ebrahim Nemati\, and alumnus Kent Goklen\nBailey Cooper is a Scientist at Regeneron\, having transitioned after several years as a faculty member at Virginia Tech. She earned her PhD in 2016 from Cornell in biomedical engineering with David Putnam. \nEbrahim Nemati is Senior Research Scientist at Samsung Research America where he interned in their Digital Health Lab as a graduate student. He earned his PhD in electrical and computer engineering from UCLA in 2017. \nKent Göklen is GSK’s Director of Downstream Process Development\, in the biopharmaceutical business unit of GlaxoSmithKline in King of Prussia\, PA. DESCRIPTION:Hear about the inner workings of the state government and the role of scientific evidence in policy making\, plus how researchers can be involved in decision making in NYS. \nNo need for registration! Open to the Graduate Community. \n\nOrganized by Advancing Science And Policy (ASAP) Cornell University \nfrom his website: \nOn July 19\, 2019\, John B. Howard was appointed Commissioner of the New York State Public Service Commission (Commission)\, his term runs through February 1\, 2024. Mr. Howard brings over 37 years of New York State service\, serving in various roles in the Legislature and Executive branches\, with vast experience in the energy sector to the Commission. At the New York Power Authority\, he was responsible for monitoring relevant activities at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC)\, Department of Environmental Conservation and the Commission. He served as Executive Deputy Director at the New York State Consumer Protection Board where he oversaw the Board’s utility intervention filings to the Commission\, FERC and the Federal Communications Commission. He was also responsible for the Board’s consumer advocacy and public outreach programs. \nAs Executive Director for then Member of Assembly Paul D. Tonko\, Chair of the Assembly Energy Committee he developed and led the Chairman’s program in energy policy and legislation including low cost energy programs\, electric deregulation\, authority reform and energy taxes. Mr. Howard served as Deputy Chief of Staff to then Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo where he developed and oversaw implementation of the Attorney General’s Community Partnership Initiative and worked on the Attorney Generals’ Wind Energy Industry initiative. \nSince 2011 he served as Director of Chamber Operations to Governor Cuomo where he was responsible for the execution of Governor Cuomo’s public appearances across the State\, requiring detailed knowledge of the Governor’s policy initiatives\, New York’s geo-politics\, including Federal\, State and local officials as well as every State agency and authority. \nOn September 23\, 2019 Commissioner Howard was appointed as member of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners’ Subcommittee on Nuclear Issues-Waste Disposal. \nCommissioner Howard received Bachelor of Science from Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and resides in Duanesburg\, New York.
