CDC Fellowship opportunity
A fellowship opportunity is currently available for those graduating with their PhD by July, with the Neural Tube Defects Surveillance and Prevention Team of the Infant Outcomes Monitoring, Research and Prevention Branch in the Division of Birth Defects and Infant Disorders of the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

NCBDDD’s mission is to improve the health of children and adults by preventing birth defects and developmental disabilities, and complications of heredity blood disorders; promoting optimal child development, and the health and wellness among children and adults living with disabilities.
Research Project: The fellow will be involved in analyzing qualitative and quantitative datasets and present findings at meetings and/or conferences. The broad range of projects that the fellow will be exposed to would include, but not be limited to:
- Examine the effectiveness and impact of current approaches for the prevention of birth defects, particularly NTDs;
- Assist with the development of prevention interventions for birth defects;
- Evaluation of maternal risk factors in conjunction with nutrient intake as they relate to NTD risk;
- Assist with birth defects surveillance and training efforts;
- Assist with efforts to assess folic acid and other micronutrient consumption among women of reproductive age;
- Analyze National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data and analyze genetic and epigenetic data.
Learning Objectives: The fellowship will provide an excellent training opportunity for a doctoral fellow to gain experience conducting public health practice in various statistical analysis projects.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: July 17, 2023. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed up to a total of five years upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR), and foreign nationals. Non-U.S. citizen applicants should refer to the Guidelines for Non-U.S. Citizens Details page of the program website for information about the valid immigration statuses that are acceptable for program participation.
ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

Qualifications
The qualified candidate should have received a doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields (e.g. Health Sciences, Epidemiology, Statistics), or be currently pursuing the degree with completion before the appointment start date. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
Preferred Skills:
- A strong research and allied health science background
- Experience analyzing data using SAS, SPSS, R and/or other statistical software
- Experience managing and analyzing data
- Experience in study design, scientific writing
- Experience in developing scientific education materials for public health and health care professionals
- Experience conducting scientific literature reviews
- Experience producing technical/scientific reports, presentations, and/or manuscripts
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
