Help expose undergrads to lab practices and hands-on research

Laura Schoenle is the instructor of BIOG 1990: Exploring Research in the Biological Sciences for first year undergraduates in the biological sciences with the goal of helping students learn about research and prepare to get involved with research at Cornell. She estimates that close to half of undergrads that enter into biological sciences come in with previous research experience, and that can lead to students without experiences feeling unprepared and believing (incorrectly) they are not competitive for research opportunities. With this workshop series, Laura aims to support those students without prior experience to begin to feel more comfortable with the research landscape and give it a try!

Seeking graduate student and postdoc volunteers to participate in the workshop series in 2 ways:

  1. Provide a tour of your research lab (and talk about your research) to two groups of 4-7 students on Friday, February 17th, 2023 between 2:45 – 4:15 PM –  8-10 volunteers needed
  2. Participate in “speed networking” in which you meet with either individual undergraduates for a 5-6 minutes at a time. This is an opportunity for them to meet researchers, learn about on-going work, and practice discussing and asking questions about science on Friday, March 4th, 2023 from 3:05 – 4:15 –  20-35 volunteers needed (food provided at this event to help with a comfortable, informal atmosphere).

If you are interested in volunteering for either event, please fill out this google form.
