Tips to apply to the BD TDLP

For PhD grads considering transitioning to the medtech industry, BD’s Technology Leadership Development Program (TLDP) might be a path to consider. The program provides PhD STEM grads within 0-3 years of their degree with three 1.5-2 year rotations (4.5-6 years in total) tailored to their interests in medical device development. The rotations are typically in two or three of the business units within BD’s key focus areas of medical, connected care, biopharma systems and interventions that are spread across the U.S. in AZ, CA, GA, IL, MD, NJ, NC, RI and UT. During the program, participants typically live and work in at least two of the locations and interact with leaders and mentors within the company.

As a TLDP associate, you shape a personalized career path targeting your skills and interests, while gaining broad exposure to the business. You are welcome to apply leading up to your defense, or as a postdoc within three years of graduation, even if you worked in industry or a startup following the degree. The program has a flexible start date, allowing you to finish up ongoing projects within a few months of acceptance.

Key elements of a successful application include demonstration of your technical flexibility and acumen, leadership, and communication skills. Successful candidates are willing to relocate, are open to being mentored at each step of the program, are looking forward to challenges, and are ready to join a welcoming team. Rotational opportunities can be in technology development, product development and strategic innovation.
