You are the CEO of Your Career
The CNY Humanities Corridor “Humanities Beyond the Academy” working group – Cornell University, Syracuse University and University of Rochester – recently hosted scholars and authors Leonard Cassuto and Robert Weisbuch to discuss and engage with humanities PhDs and postdoctoral scholars on how to use your graduate education to explore careers outside of academia. One key takeaway was that you are the CEO of your career. You – the student – can control your experiences and connections. Take advantage of opportunities at your institution such as industry skill-building workshops, alumni events, and any opportunities to engage with professionals in industry. Another discussion point stressed that you can increase your mentor circle to include industry folks — perhaps an alum that you connected with on campus or via a discussion that developed over research topics. Think about what your needs and career questions are, then utilize the connections around you.
